Nation’s best ice racers to compete for AMA National No. 1 plates at charitable events

PICKERINGTON, Ohio — The nation’s best motorcycle ice racers will have two opportunities to compete for AMA No. 1 plates in 2020, with AMA Ice Race Grand Championship events scheduled a week apart in January in Wisconsin.

The first event, the High Voltage Ice Races, takes place Jan. 12 and features oval racing at Wilson Park in downtown Milwaukee.

The second event is a grand prix-style competition that runs concurrently with the Steel Shoe Fund’s three-hour endurance race on Jan. 19 at Kettle Moraine Lake in Campbellsport, Wis.

The events will be scored separately, and class winners at each event will be awarded AMA National No. 1 plates.

“We are delighted to be working with the Steel Shoe Fund for the second consecutive year, and we’re happy to welcome High Voltage to the ranks of AMA Championship promoters,” AMA Track Racing Manager Ken Saillant said. “Both organizations work hard to support good causes, and we’re looking forward to some great ice racing in January.”

This will be the first year the High Voltage Ice Races will be sanctioned as an AMA Grand Championship. The event is organized by Ron Brefka of iRon Industries, and proceeds go to support pancreatic cancer research. There is no admission fee for spectators, but donations to the WeCare Fund are encouraged.

“The High Voltage Ice Races are excited and proud to bring the AMA Ice Race Grand Championship to Milwaukee,” Brefka said. “We will have spectacular racing at a great venue, while also supporting the community through a donation to the registered WeCare Fund for cancer research. It will be an absolutely amazing event for the AMA, the WeCare Fund and the Milwaukee area motorcycling community.”

The Steel Shoe Fund’s endurance race first took place in 1997 and served as the AMA Ice Race National Championship in 2019. The competition takes place on a winding, technical course designed by AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famer Jeff Fredette. The Steel Shoe Fund is a nonprofit that raises money to support injured flat track racers.

“The Steel Shoe Fund is excited to host an AMA ice race championship again,” organizer Chris Daranco said. “We will run four classes on our 7-mile course, including an Ironman Class for riders who want to do the three-hour race on their own. We look forward to making this event the best it can be.”
