Claim: Injured motorcyclists are uninsured and disproportionately rely upon the public to pay for their injuries.

Response: Motorcyclists are just as likely to be privately insured as any other road user.

A medical center study¹ reported that injured motorcyclists in the trauma center relied on public funds a lower percentage of the time than did automobile drivers to pay their hospital bills during the same time period.

A university study² reported that automobile drivers and motorcyclists have their medical costs covered by insurance at a nearly identical rate.

Conclusion: Injured motorcyclists are less likely than the general population to use public funds to pay for injuries sustained in crashes, and no more likely to be uninsured than other vehicle operators.

The AMA Recreational Riding Commission is the volunteer body that discusses ways to enhanceand promote recreational riding events by the American Motorcyclist Association.

The AMA Recreational Riding Commission also strives to promote AMA membership growth and the AMA through sanctioned recreational riding events.

The AMA Recreational Riding Commission represents all recreational riding disciplines
sanctioned by the AMA.

Recreational riding disciplines sanctioned by the AMA include:
1. Dual Sports
2. Adventure Rides
3. Field Meets
4. Road Enduro/Reliability Runs
5. Road Ride/Runs
6. Scavenger Hunt/Geocaching
7. Trail Rides
8. Motogiro
9. Rallies
10. Recreational Riding Schools

*Commission meetings are scheduled once every quarter.

Each AMA Recreational Riding Commission appointee shall serve a two-year term. Appointees may serve multiple terms. Preferably, commission members will be appointed January 1 of each year. However, at any time the AMA can add a commission member when deemed appropriate. Commission members will serve for a calendar two-year term, if they are appointed at any other time throughout the year.

AMA Recreational Riding Commission appointees may include the following:
1. A representative from Recognized District Organization (RDO)
2. A representative of an AMA-chartered promoter or club
3. An AMA member
4. A noted expert in a discipline represented by the commission.

AMA Recreational Riding Commission appointment procedures are:
1. Completed commission member applications must be submitted to the AMA.

2. Applications will be reviewed and nominated for appointment.
3. Following review and nominations by staff, Commission appointments are made by the
AMA President and CEO.
4. Appointees must be AMA members in good standing and complete the following
training within three months of appointment:

It is the responsibility of AMA Recreational Riding Commission members to:

1. Attend and participate in the scheduled commission meetings.
2. Accept and organize recommendations from AMA members. AMA Recreational Riding
Commission appointees shall attend events and solicit information from AMA members
and be prepared to discuss these issues with their AMA Commission.
3. Submit recommendations and action items through the official process for any
upcoming actions and review.

• All recommendations and action items will be followed up on in 30 days with a
a 6-month final review.
• All recommendations and action items will be discussed and reviewed in the
subsequent commission meeting.
• All recommendations for rulebook changes/edits must be submitted by October
1 to be considered for the following year’s rulebook.
4. Aid AMA staff regarding research and operational issues.
5. Assist or serve as an AMA representative at AMA-sanctioned events, as necessary.
6. Provide on-site operational assistance to AMA staff at AMA-sanctioned events on an as
needed basis.
7. Promote cooperation, consensus and harmony among other organizations and the AMA.
8. Promote the interests of the AMA, including growth of membership.
9. Participate throughout the year in AMA Recreational Riding Commission activities and
support AMA staff as necessary.

Individuals who cannot conscientiously meet these responsibilities should not seek nor accept a
nomination for an AMA Recreational Riding Commission appointment.

The AMA Recreational Riding Commission meetings are held virtually. Commission meetings are scheduled once every quarter.

AMA Commission appointees will:
1. Participate in discussions that advance their responsibilities to consider, disseminate,
amend, interpret, and assist in the promotion and operation of recreational riding events
sanctioned by the AMA.
2. Discuss recommendations, best practices, and ideas to improve the AMA’s mission.
3. In accordance with procedures established by the AMA, elect a chairperson for the
AMA Recreational Riding Commission.

Additional meetings of the AMA Recreational Riding Commission may be convened by the AMA Commission chairperson or the AMA. These additional meetings may be conducted in person, by telephone, or virtually, in coordination with AMA staff. Provided all AMA Commission appointees have been notified of an AMA Commission meeting, 25 percent of the appointees of the AMA Commission constitutes a quorum.

The AMA President may remove any member from an AMA Commission for any acts or omissions that involve moral turpitude, felonious crimes, fraud, improper conflict of interest, breach of fiduciary duty or disloyalty to the AMA or acts that bring the AMA into disrepute for any reason.
