AMA 100 Year Feature Story

July 2024 Feature

All the amazing things going on in the 1960s blasted right into the ’70s as if powered by two nitromethane-gargling engines running WFO — much like AMA Hall of Famer T.C. Christensen’s “Hogslayer,” a twin-engined Norton drag racer and the first motorcycle to break the 7-second barrier, circa 1972. Motocross and road racing exploded during the ’70s, and the AMA was plenty busy establishing a Supercross series, fighting on behalf of motorcyclists and changing its name to the American Motorcyclist Association. All this backlit by Vietnam, Watergate, stadium rock-‘n’-roll and more led to a jam-packed decade.
