About AMA Scholarship Races

In 2018, the AMA and On Track School discussed the need for continuing educational support for racers, and together came up with a program to award scholarship funds at approved sanctioned races. Over the following year, members of On Track School continued to meet with AMA representatives, conducted research, met with MX Sports to expand the reach of the program and presented findings to the AMA, supporting a plan to implement based on a successful model shared by the USA BMX Foundation.

The panel agreed on the mission of the Scholarship Race Program: Community support for education through racing. The very first event, coined Cash for Class, took place in Nov. 2019 at the Georgia Practice Facility (GPF) in Cairo, Ga.

Raising Scholarship Funds

The 2022 Cash for Class event brought in 528 individual race entries and raised more than $22,000 in donations. Of that, $12,500 was paid in scholarship certificates to 529 education savings plans. Leftover donations are held in an endowment fund by On Track Learning Solutions, Inc. For 2022, all eligible racers who competed in a qualifying Scholarship Race had the opportunity to apply for $7,500 in scholarship funds, the leftover donations from the races. See the 2021 winners (PDF).

Since the conception of the Scholarship Race Program, over $75,000 has been raised, and to date over $60,000 in scholarships have been awarded.

An established advisory scholarship panel is in place to help with the races and to determine scholarship recipients. This panel includes On Track School Director Andrea Leib, On Track School Operations Manager Tasha Renfro, Georgia Practice Facility’s Ray Woods and Josh Woods, AMA Director of Racing Mike Pelletier, AMA Deputy Director of Racing Michael Burkeen, AMA Racing Program Manager Alexandria Reasoner, MX Sports Director Tim Cotter, and former AMA Pro Motocross and AMA Supercross Champion Jeff Emig.
