With early-season momentum hanging in the balance, Eli Tomac outlasted Chase Sexton on Saturday to win his third-of-four events in the 2023 AMA Supercross season.

While Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing’s Tomac returned to his familiar spot atop the 450SX podium, Team Honda HRC’s Hunter Lawrence started his 250SX East campaign off strong with a win in Houston.

Tomac, who fell short of the podium a week ago at the Anaheim 2 round dominated by Team Honda HRC’s Sexton, had to earn his right to light the torches with Sexton nipping at his heels for a large portion of the race. Forced to overcome a persistent Sexton and a red flag that called for a staggered restart just minutes into the main event, Tomac held on to the top spot to increase his lead in the 450SX standings to 7 points over Sexton.

Sexton’s valiant effort scored him second place on the night while Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Jason Anderson took the final spot on the podium. Anderson sits in fourth in the 450SX standings, 19 points behind Tomac.

In the 250SX East season opener, Lawrence grabbed the holeshot but quickly surrendered the top spot to Red Bull KTM’s Tom Vialle. Thanks to a high-speed save in the opening lap, Lawrence remained in contention before retaking the lead and never looking back, ultimately leading 16-of-18 laps.

Fire Power Honda’s Max Anstie and Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing’s Jordon Smith rounded out the podium.

The action continues Saturday in Tampa, Florida.
