Grand Tours allow participants the freedom to ride to checkpoints on their own time. Most grand tours take place over several months or an entire year. Some grand tours encompass a single state, while others are nationwide. Each AMA-chartered organizer sets the tour routes, checkpoints and rules.

If you’re a fan of 1950s and 1960s road racing motorcycles, take a look at the rare offerings up for bid at the Bonhams auction Aug. 14-16 at the Stafford County Showground at Bicester Heritage in England.

Examples include a restored 1959 Benelli 250 Bialbero GP Mono, one of only four built. It was purchased from world grand prix road racing champion John Surtees in the 1980s. Also featured is a 1954 Mondial 175 Bialbero GP that is an ex-factory road racing machine, and a 1959 Mondial Paton 250 Gran Premio that  was built by Giuseppe Pattoni, who produced “over the counter” racers with Mondial engines.

From sagebrush flats to juniper-covered hills to a 700-foot-tall sand dune, the Little Sahara Recreation Area in Utah offers a variety of riding conditions for all skill levels.

Located about 100 miles south of Salt Lake City, the federal Bureau of Land Management’s Little Sahara Recreation Area features Sand Mountain, which is the 700-foot-high challenging dune. On the back side of the dune is an area of about 6 square miles of dunes to ride. To the northwest of the mountain are the White Sands Dunes, which are abut 8 miles long and at some places 2 miles wide.

A 1975 Suzuki 750cc race bike that was ridden by two AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famers and later won the famed Isle of Man TT is up for auction in August, as well as a 1976 Morbidelli 250cc machine raced by AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famer Giacomo Agostini.

The bikes are among more than 580 lots of motorcycles and memorabilia that will be auctioned at Bicester Heritage, Oxfordshire, in England Aug. 14-16.

If you’ve ever gone trail riding in Michigan you know that there are thousands of miles of trails. Among the best is the Bull Gap Trail near the town of Mio, which has a population of about 1,800, in the north-central Lower Peninsula.

Not only does the trail system feature more than 115 miles of trails in the Huron-Manistee National Forests, but it also has a hill climb if you are up to the challenge. The sand hill is long and steep at two-tenths of a mile with a 35- to 40-percent grade. Many spectators turn out on holiday weekends to watch riders tackle the hill.

Council members voted to cancel the traditional opening ceremony, B-1 flyover, photo towers and other events. There will be hand sanitizing stations throughout the city because of the COVID-19 virus.
